Bonsai Berries and Other Winter Delights 1/1/18

Nothing like brilliant little berries to brighten things up in this white winter deep freeze we've been 'enjoying' lately (it's 11am and my thermometer says -9F). The translation of Katsumi Komiya's caption for this tree says simply... "Plum" I did quick online search and didn't come up with a match for a plum with fruit this small, but if you really want to know, my guess is you might find it with a little perseverance. And it might help not to take plum too literally.

The caption for this sweet little tree is simply "Mayumi," which is a common Japanese girl's name that translates as truth or beauty. Works eh? (I live only 50 miles from Canada, so I get a dispensation)

 

Facebook's translation for this one is 'smell', so your guess is as good as mine (quite probably even better)

Here's a caption we can work with... "Maple with stone." I'll go out on a limb (so to speak) and guess Japanese maple (Acer palmatum)

 

The Japanese have two names for this type planting. It's a shitakusa if you use it as a companion in a bonsai display, and it's a kusamono if you display it by itself or as the focal point in a display. Katsui Komina's caption says "Chrysanthemum, yabukouji."  Translation: Spear flower (Ardisia japonica). The plant with the little red berries.
