Two More Bonsai & Two Special Events at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum

This dynamic and wild looking Shimpaku juniper, aka Sargent’s juniper (Juniperus chinensis var. Sargentii), with its barely visible living vein (or veins?), was donated to the U.S. National Bonsai & Penjing Museum (Japanese Collection) by Kenichi Oguchi in 1976. It has been in training since 1905. The Museum’s logo (below) was inspired by this tree Today we’ve got two special events from the U.S. National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, sandwiched between a couple Junipers from the Museum’s Japanese Collection. Stay posted for more events and more magnificent trees from the Museum’s new website   PHOTOGRAPHING BONSAI WITH STEPHEN VOSS Feb 9, … Continue reading Two More Bonsai & Two Special Events at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum

The Time Is Right…

One of the over 150 bonsai by Walter Pall that are featured in the gallery of Modern Bonsai Practice, a ground breaking New Bonsai book. Learning the art of bonsai from the best bonsai books is an essential way to upgrade your bonsai skills. Second only to taking live courses from expert bonsai teachers. Many of us have advanced our bonsai skills by relying on books and our willingness to just jump in and learn as we go. You might even say trial and error, though we hope it’s more trial and less error. This post is a reminder about … Continue reading The Time Is Right…

In Training, a Photographic Masterpiece

In Training, a brand new photographic masterpiece by Stephen Voss has arrived at our warehouse and is ready to ship. It’s a book that started generating buzz way before it even went to the printer, including at Slate magazine in an article titled, Zen & the Art of Bonsai Maintenance. Since then it has been featured in a number of places in and out of the bonsai world. Here’s a quote from Ryan Neil (Bonsai Mirai) about this remarkable book, “There’s an intimacy to bonsai that is largely invisible. It exists in those sacred moments between artist and tree in … Continue reading In Training, a Photographic Masterpiece

“There’s an intimacy to bonsai that is largely invisible…”

Portrait of a Trident maple by Stephen Voss Stephen Voss seldom shoots the whole bonsai and though I can’t speak for him, it seems as if he searches for the the heart of the tree in details. Like the way bark cracks and flakes, or the sheen on a Trident trunk when the light is just right. We just got our complimentary copies* of Stephen Voss’ remarkable new book, In Training. If you are familiar with Stephen’s work, it’s almost needless to say that it is stunningly beautiful, but we’ll say it anyway… it is stunningly beautiful and to my … Continue reading “There’s an intimacy to bonsai that is largely invisible…”

Stephen Vos’ upcoming book, In Training is generating buzz all over the place, including at Slate magazine (the photos and captions shown here were all lifted directly from Slate, as was the title, Zen & the Art of Bonsai Maintenance ). Enjoy the photos and feel free to join us in support of Stephen’s worthy project.           NEW Bonsai Wire Special Kilo coils of Bonsai Aesthetics Wire marked down from 19.50 now only 15.50 each plus … Continue reading Zen & the Art of Bonsai Maintenance

A Post Dated Love Letter

We’ve featured this famous Hiroshima Japanese white pine before, but it’s never looked quite like this. The highlighted foliage takes on a life of its own, like wild junipers on a mountainside. This photo is one of many unusual and beautiful shots taken at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum by Stephen Voss. Yesterday it was a video to promote Stephen Voss’ Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming book (if enough of us chip in it’s a sure thing). Today it’s just a few of Stephen’s stark yet rich and evocative stills from the U.S. Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Enjoy! The … Continue reading A Post Dated Love Letter

Bonsai In Training

This ‘great and beautiful’ video by Stephen Vos is a must watch for any serious bonsai artist or enthusiast. Stephen Voss’ video speaks for itself, so normally we would leave it at that. However, we almost never miss a chance to quote the informed and always skillfully written words of our friend Michael Hagedorn (the Bonsai Village guy and superb American bonsai artist, teacher and author). In Michael’s own words: “My friend Stephen Voss has embarked on a great and beautiful project, a book of fine art photographs of bonsai. He’s running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the book, … Continue reading Bonsai In Training
