Four Shohin Bonsai & a Strange Translation

Miyazato Rintaro posted these four small trees last month. Here’s a strange machine translation for you… “For Sale. I’m going to give it to the net in the afternoon. This time, from mini bonsai to small pieces, We have a tree with sights. Please contact us” Shohin means a small thing in Japanese and all four of these trees qualify. They were posted by Miyazato Rintaro . The translations are machine generated, and though they generally tend to be better than they were a couple years ago, they still have a ways to go MID WINTER SITE WIDE SALE 20% OFF EVERYTHING PLUS … Continue reading Four Shohin Bonsai & a Strange Translation

Colorful fall highlights at Morten Albek’s Shohin bonsai garden NEW ONLINE BONSAI COURSE Morten Albek of Shohin Bonsai Europe and Oscar Jonker at Bonsai Empire have teamed up to create a Brand New Online Shohin Bonsai Course. I am familiar with both of these gentlemen (Stone Lantern published and edited Morten’s Shohin Bonsai, Majesty in Miniature – sorry, out of print – and I’ve been borrowing great photos from Oscar for a long time), so if my two cents are still worth anything, I’m betting it’s a winner You’ll need some good tools if you’re going to take the course NEW ROSHI TOOL SPECIAL 30% … Continue reading New Roshi Tool Special & New Shohin Bonsai Course

Winning Shohin & Mame Bonsai

The winner of the Finest Mame Bonsai at the 6th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition. It’s a Willow leaf ficus (Ficus neriifolia) that belongs to Johnson Teh. No dimensions are given, but some sources list mame as up to 4″ (10cm) tall. Others go a little taller. Oscar Jonker took the photo. I cropped it for a closer look. Back Savers – Suthin’s Shohin

Bonsai in hand. This little masterpice by Suthin Sukosolvisit looks like a Chinzan Azalea. But that’s just a guess. Suthin doesn’t say. Still recovering from vacation and a serious computer meltdown (fixed now by there’s chaos in its wake), so it’s back to our archives. This one originally appeared in August, 2009 (Bonsai Bark’s Pleistocene). Note: non of the links are still active, so this will be a linkless post. A first for us I’ve long been a fan of Suthin Sukosolvisit’s. Not just because of his shohin, but because he shows mastery across a range of bonsai sizes and styles. Still, shohin … Continue reading Back Savers – Suthin’s Shohin

Just for Fun!!! – Shohin Mugo Pine Before & After

After. Mugo pine by Suthin Sukosolvisit. We know you like to see the before and after photos side by side, but in this case it doesn’t fit the format on social media, so we put it just below Continuing with Suthin. Today it’s a Before and After. As you can see just below, something very unusual has happened. How did he compress this tree so radically? And how long did it take him? Suthin doesn’t say, but if you look at the closeup below, it’s not too difficult to see. Both photos shown here are from Suthin’s timeline. An Exciting ‘New’ Shohin Bonsai Forum

I’m a sucker for a tree like this, with its colorful profusion of tiny fruit and its muscular little trunk. It’s a Dwarf Kumquat (Kinzu) that I took the liberty to crop in order to eliminate background noise (the uncropped original is below). Our source for this photo (see below) mentions the type tree, but there’s no artist/owner listed. I just discovered an exciting new (to me) forum of, in their own words… “Community for bonsai artists who like mini and shohin bonsai.” Their quote continues… “Please join our community of shohin fans and take part by posting your pictures, … Continue reading An Exciting ‘New’ Shohin Bonsai Forum

Shohin Bonsai… (Copper Wire Sale EndsTonight)

Judging by the leaves and fruit, I’d guess that this might be a dwarf Kumquat of some sort. Whatever it is, I know it’s small because of the proportions and because it’s part of Shohin display. Beyond that, I can’t read the Japanese script, so there’s nothing definite to say about the artist or the type trees shown here. The Shohin bonsai in this post may not be the most sophisticated or otherwise fantastic that we’ve featured over the years (we have over 200 posts in our archives where Shohin is at least mentioned), but there’s something uncontrived and basic … Continue reading Shohin Bonsai… (Copper Wire Sale EndsTonight)
