Snow flowers at the Luis Vallejo’s Museo De Bonsais Alcobendas. The tree looks like it could be a Stewartia. Yesterday we enjoyed a touch of false spring in Northern Vermont. But winter never gives up this early, so we’ll have to wait a couple more months for the real thing. Meanwhile, we can look forward to some more snow and ice. Which bring us to today’s post. Bonsai Berries and Other Winter Delights

Nothing like brilliant little berries to brighten things up in this white winter deep freeze we’ve been ‘enjoying’ lately (it’s 11am and my thermometer says -9F). The translation of Katsumi Komiya’s caption for this tree says simply… “Plum” I did quick online search and didn’t come up with a match for a plum with fruit this small, but if you really want to know, my guess is you might find it with a little perseverance. And it might help not to take plum too literally. Two Splendid Cedar Bonsai

This has to be one of the very best Northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) bonsai we’ve seen yet. We’ve seen thousands of magnificent Cedars growing in the wild here in Northern Vermont and surrounding states and provinces, but very few top quality bonsai. Bonsai Events, Dirty Pick Ups and a Few Loose Ends

This pine (looks like a Japanese white; Pinus parviflora) is from the 2011 Taikan-ten bonsai exhibition in Japan. The photo was borrowed from Empire Bonsai. You don’t see that many great multiple-trunk bonsai (here’s another one we posted recently) and I think this one qualifies. It’s hard to tell from this angle if all the trunks are sharing a single root-system. It could be a twin-trunk tree and a triple-trunk clump combined. Upcoming events.
