There Are Bonsai, and then…

There are bonsai and then there are bonsai. This fluid masterpiece belongs to Isao Omachi. There are other adjectives that come to mind, like elegant, graceful and exquisite, but the problem with writing about bonsai almost everyday is these superlatives get used until they lose their meaning. Oh well. Mr Omachi doesn’t say anything about this tree and I won’t venture any guesses. It’s from his facebook photos. All the trees shown here are from Isao Omachi’s facebook photos. If you’ve been following the international bonsai scene, you know that he’s the one who had his entire bonsai collection (and … Continue reading There Are Bonsai, and then…

Fractured Pot, Tea Time, Widly Expressive Deadwood, Bewildering At A Glance & Chicago (BTW)

There’s a lot to like about this Shimpaku juniper, though it’s not typical to see such dense foliage on a bunjin style bonsai. But in this case, I think the relatively heavy foliage is balanced by the strength of the trunk and the wildly expressive deadwood at the top. The tree belongs to Nicola Kitora Crivelli. It’s from a gallery on  Bonsai Empire.   Win a ten dollar gift certificate to Stone Lantern (if you come up with the correct answer and you follow the instructions). You will win if you are the first person to come up with the … Continue reading Fractured Pot, Tea Time, Widly Expressive Deadwood, Bewildering At A Glance & Chicago (BTW)

Nice outcome.”  “Great overall flow. Could reduce … Continue reading More Bonsai from Scratch Winners

Perfect Just As It Is?

A daring presentation from Candy Shirley’s bonsai collection. Here’s an example of a rather intriguing bonsai and pot relationship. Your eye (if it behaves like mine) goes straight to the pot. Its mass is at least equal to the tree, it’s at the same elevation as the tree, and it’s just so strong and unusual. Do you think that the tree is a bit overwhelmed? What about its pincher shape? Would you have done it differently or is the whole presentation perfect just as it is? And another question while we are at it Is it just me, or has … Continue reading Perfect Just As It Is?
