Omiya’s Pines, Bonsai Beauty & Heart

Combining two arts and two artists, here’s a small piece of the translation with this striking photo… “Daiki Abe: Bonsai Artist. Takashi Eguchi: Photographer. Name: the two exhibition of bonsai and photography ‘Pine Beauty heart'” There is no species given with this pine, but it looks like a Japanese white (Pinus parviflora). The photo is from Omiya Bonsai Museum’s timeline, along with more information on the display. The rest of the photos in this post are Japanese white pines, also from Omiya’s timeline, but not from this display We could go on indefinitely with photos from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. Masters of Refining Bonsai

We don’t usually feature photos with so much background noise, but this Trident maple is phenomenal and it’s the only shot we’ve got Just home from vacation. The return was supposed to be a two day trek, but snow added a day.  Anyway, it’s late and I could skip today’s post, but instead we’ll just keep digging up Omiya Bonsai Museum photos from our archives (this one is from January, 2015). It’s easy enough and it will provide another opportunity for a heads up about the end of our Site Wide Sale tomorrow night  All the bonsai shown here resides at the Omiya … Continue reading Masters of Refining Bonsai

One of the Most Unique Pines in Our Ten Years of Blogging

This Kuromatsu, aka Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) was featured at the 27th Japan Bonsai Writer Association exhibition (Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyokai exhibition), where this photo was taken. I cropped the original photo (see just below) for a closer look at just the tree I found this magnificent tree on The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum‘s timeline. This famous museum is home to some of the best bonsai in the world and this Japanese black pine is certainly no exception. To my eye it is one of the most unique pines we’ve featured in our ten years of blogging (well, nine years and 10 months). It’s so … Continue reading One of the Most Unique Pines in Our Ten Years of Blogging

Gilding the Bonsai

Gilding the lily. Or more accurately, gilding the Satsuki azalea. You might like this brilliant tree in such a colorful pot when it isn’t blooming, but as is… well, you be the judge. I found the photo and the other two shown here on Kuanghua Hsiao’s timeline. Mr Hsiao wrote… By Bonsai Addicted, but we know better (Addicted is one of those places that posts a lot of other peoples trees and often doesn’t attribute or identify). Only one of the three trees shown here is attributed to its owner. We try to be honest about our sources and let you know when they’re not the owner or artist. … Continue reading Gilding the Bonsai

Bonsai Elegance from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum

I’ve never been to the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, but if the elegance of the display shown in this photo is any indication, maybe I should start saving my yen. Continuing our Omiya Bonsai Art Museum theme and still on vacation so we’ll also continue borrowing from our archives (with a little value added today). The three photos shown here were part of a post that appeared in May, 2012. Japanese five needle pine (Goyomatsu) from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum’s gallery. Japanese five needle pines are also called Japanese white pine. The Latin is Pinus parviflora, or sometimes Pinus … Continue reading Bonsai Elegance from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum

Ume Flowering Bonsai with Sabamaki & Uro

An old Ume from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. Aside from the flowers, buds and aged bark, you might notice the hollowed out trunk (sabamiki). And if you look closely you can also see several uro (small hollows that are left on deciduous trees where branches have rotted and fallen off… though bonsai uro may well be man made). Still on vacation, so once again we’ll dig into the deep riches of our archives (while continuing with our Omiya Bonsai Art Museum  theme). This one is from July 2012 (with a little present tense editing). Ume have several names: Prunus mume (or just Mume), … Continue reading Ume Flowering Bonsai with Sabamaki & Uro
