Something for Bonsai Rock Planting Lovers & Fans

Great stone. Great planting. All but the lowest juniper appear to be growing in pockets of soil in the stone. This is referred to as a root-on-rock bonsai. It looks like the lowest one has its roots growing down into the pot (protected for now by moss). This would be root-over-rock style. Hanging off a Cliff Somewhere in the Alps

This very distinctive bonsai belongs to Mauro Stemberger. The rock was made by Erik Križovenský, a master of unique pots and other creative vessels for planting bonsai. No mention is made of the type tree, but it looks like some type of Juniper. Elevating a Root-on-Rock Bonsai

With bonsai, it’s almost always the tree that dominates, even though the pot, (stone, slab or whatever) is considered a critical part of the whole. In this case however, it’s the rock that elevates the planting to extraordinary. Or, you might say it’s the rock and the way it’s adorned by the old tree along with the moss and ferns, that makes this planting extraordinary. The tree is a Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica). Dancing on the Edge of Balance

Juan Andrade’s precariously balanced Japanese white pine stone planting. If I understand the translation from Spanish, the stone is not bolted, glued or tied down in any way. Though when someone asked if it is stable in the wind, Juan replied “Yes, the stone is very heavy. But still it is tied down for safety.” This photo was cropped. Flowering Bonsai Brighten the Darkest Days

A peach. We’ll call this ‘flowering peach perched on a rock with small pond.’ According to our source (see below), it’s a Prunus persica (Peach tree). No cultivar is given, but it looks to me like it may be a variety that was developed for flowers rather than fruit. Even without the flowers it would be a sweet planting with lots of character.
