You Be The Judge & Good Things Will Happen 3/17/10

Judge our $100 Bonsai Art Contest and win a $30.00 Judge’s Gift Certificate to Stone Lantern for the best judges comments (comments are optional; see below under ‘How can you win….’).

The basics
The 13 bonsai art entries below (placed roughly in the order we received them) have been entered in our $100 Bonsai Art Contest. The winner will be determined when 25 judges have sent in their decisions, or by April 30th (whichever comes first). Anyone can judge (see below if you entered in the contest), but only one time per person.

The details
1. Review the contest rules.

2. Take a close look at the 13 entries below. Each one will be assigned a letter (A to M).

3. Assign your first choice 5 points, second choice 3 points and 3rd choice 1 point.

4. Email your ratings to me: wayne@stonelantern.com (with ‘you be the judge’ in the subject line). Put the entry’s letter first followed by the number of points you assign. It should look like this: R-5, S-3, Z-1. Include critiques only if you want.

Critiques are optional: You do not have to write any critiques to be a judge in our Bonsai Art Contest. However, you must write critiques of your choices if you want to win the $30.00 Judge’s Gift Certificate to Stone Lantern. Keep your comments short and sweet; the winning critiques will be simple and straight to the heart of the matter.

Can you judge if you entered the contest?
Yes, if you want. However, you can’t assign 5 point to your own entry. You must assign 5 points to an entry that is not yours. You can assign your own entry 3, 1, or zero points.

Only one family or friend please
Please ask a maximum of only one family or friend to judge if you have entered the contest. A stuffed ballot box could mess the whole contest up. This will have to be on the honor system, but that shouldn’t be a problem as all of our contestants are, no doubt, honorable people.

Judging your critiques
The five of us who work at Stone Lantern will judge your critiques.

Send your selections to me
Send you selections to wayne@stonelantern.com. Critiques are optional (see above).

  1. No judges will be mentioned until after the judging is over. Then, the only judges that will be outed are ones whose comments (critiques) we decide to post. This will certainly include the winning judge and, if we like some other comments, we may decided to post them.

  2. Hi Wayne,

What an interesting collection of artistic items have been posted, and to think it all started from my previous note to you on Australian native species. We had our 7th National Exhibition last weekend and we were very pleased with the 35 trees on display.

For the competition “Aussie Judge Judy” votes as follows:

Entry F = 5 points (reminds me a lot of Robert Steven and his approach to bonsai)

Entry H = 3 points (winter is still beautiful with ramification and nebari to please the eye)

Entry E = 1 point (we are going into autummn here so red colour just took my fancy)

    Thanks to all contributors

    regards
    Frank Kelly

  3. Well, there’s one judge that outed himself. It’s okay Frank, you have a special status now, having innocently started the whole thing. Everyone else should send their judging votes to me at wayne@stonelantern.com.

And BTW: thanks Frank, your drawing most certainly was the inspiration. Got any thing else for us?

Oh, and I think you might be the first entry who didn’t vote for himself/herself. That’s old school, mate!

  4. Thanks Mike and Don,
We’ll accept Don’s but Mike you need a first, second and third place, and choices should be submitted to me by email wayne@stonelantern,com.
