Flowering Bonsai & Dissolving Boundaries 6/1/16

It's a little strange to see such prominent deadwood on an azalea. But then boundaries between acceptable and strange are dissolving in the world of bonsai as they seem to be almost everywhere.

A year ago we posted some photos from the 2015 Uneo Satsuki Azalea Festival. Now we’ve got some from the 2016 festival that we lifted from a video by hermanbaik. Most were blown up to fit our format, thus the fuzz. Still, the brilliance of the trees and their flowers can’t help but shine through.

More conventional to be sure, but there was a time not too long ago where it was unusual to see a flowering bonsai in an unglazed pot.

The configuration of the flowers and leaves presents another break with convention. Or at least convention as I know it. I wonder if this was intentional or just a happy accident.

All of the tree shown here would be impressive even without their flowers and this one is certainly no exception. Most bonsai lovers I know would mortgage their house for a tree with a nebari and trunk like this.

Another brilliant tree with prominent deadwood. BTW, even with the fuzz, you can tell that it's a root-over-rock bonsai.

Another root-over-rock beauty. The extended surface area serves to show more flowers.
