This knotted pine, along with the two pines below, were recently posted by Frank Cucchiara. Frank doesn't say anything about them (they look like Japanese black pines), but based on what we know about Frank, we can assume they are his.
This post was going to be short and simple. Three pines borrowed from Frank Cucchiara. But, suddenly, after a little research, we’ve got a tribute to Frank’s bonsai.

Great tree, but it's the heavy aged bark that really sets it apart.
Frank Cucchiara is one of two Americans who exhibited trees in the 2014 Kokufu Exhibition (the other American was Doug Paul owner of the Kennett Collection). Kokufu is world’s oldest bonsai exhibition and is generally recognized as the world’s premier bonsai exhibition. Having a tree selected for Kokufu is a great honor (Frank’s Kokufu display is below).
Frank was also a prize winner at the 4th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition (his prize winning Olive is below).

Evergreen Bonsai Award at the 2014 U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition for the Finest Evergreen Bonsai. It's a Wild Olive that belongs to Frank Cucchiara. What a great choice! This distinctive old tree would more than hold its own with the best of the gnarly old Olives that you find in Europe. I borrowed this photo and caption from a post we did back in September, 2014.
