Spring Is Coming! Only Fourteen Weeks Until Our Bonsai Awaken

The new growth on some Spruce is often a brilliant yellow. Almost like yellow flowers. In this case the spruce is an Ezo (Picea jezoensis). This one resides at the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum as do the other trees in this post. It’s the shortest day of the year and you know what that means…  SPRING is coming! I know it’s too soon and a little crazy and even a little cruel to think this way when we still have about fourteen weeks of cold stretched out in front of us before our bonsai wake up and start making their … Continue reading Spring Is Coming! Flying Bonsai & Famous Roshi Tools

This fluid tree with its distinctive flying pot (by Erik Križovenský)is from Bonsai Do. The caption says with Tony Tickle (I visited Tony’s blog and couldn’t find it). There’s also this quote by Thomas Browne (it’s in Spanish on Bonsai Do, but here’s the original English): Art is the perfection of nature. Nature hath made one world, and art another. Japanese Black Pine 100% Made in America

“This exposed root Japanese black pine is a beautiful blend of Japanese sensibility and American craftsmanship…. Obviously it’s a Japanese species, and it’s hard to argue that several of the styling cues are based on Japanese bonsai. However, this tree is 100% made in America. The tree itself, started from seed and grown as bonsai material in California. The pot, hand made by American potter Dale Cochy, circa 2004. All brought together, styled and finished by me, an American bonsai artists trained in Japan. An exciting collision of several worlds and a respectful nod to all things bonsai from US … Continue reading Japanese Black Pine 100% Made in America

Up to Our Elbows

This luscious planting resides at the North Carolina Arboretum. The photo was put up on the Internet Bonsai Club forum by Arthur Joura (Arthur’s caption is below). Now that we’re up to our elbows in snow, I thought it would be nice to flash back on a luscious planting in full spring vitality in contrast with what it looked like last winter. Powerful Bonsai & an Ode to a Powerful Turntable

An excellent (if somewhat unkempt) Yew astride a Green T turntable.  At least I think it’s a Yew (Taxus). We have a handful of wonderful Green T Turntables left for the season, and I can think of no better gift for any bonsai artist… professional, highly accomplished non-professional, or simply aspiring. Swept Away by a Bonsai Broom

When it comes to broom-style bonsai, this Zelkova is no doubt among the very best. In addition to one of the most perfectly developed crowns anywhere (with an amazing profusion of tiny leaves), it provides an excellent example of trunk and surface root development. Neither are overstated; providing a welcome relief from the overly dramatic trunk taper and grotesque nebari that you sometimes see on deciduous trees. But then, you might expect perfection from this tree; it’s from Grand Master Saburo Kato’s collection. For a long time Mr Kato was recognized as Japan’s preeminent Bonsai artist. Up to our old … Continue reading Swept Away by a Bonsai Broom

Sturdy Spruce Bonsai

This impressively sturdy tree is from the cover of Bonsai Today issue 61 (all issues are now 30% – 40% off). As you can see, it’s a Picea glehnii (Sakhalin spruce) though it’s often confused with Ezo spruce (Picea jezoensis) and for all I know, could be an Ezo spruce (there doesn’t seem to be general agreement on which is which).
