Bonsai, Culture & a Meeting Place for Friends & Bonsai Lovers (What happens in Belgium…)

noel1This highly unusual and remarkably powerful tree is from the cover of the 10th Noelanders Trophy book. I couldn't find any information on the variety (looks like a Japanese white pine), the artist or the photographer.

The 18th Noelanders Trophy is coming soon. February 4-5. It’s a long standing favorite in Europe. But not just Europe; bonsai artists and enthusiasts from around the world have long considered it a favorite destination for bonsai, culture and a meeting place for old friends and bonsai lovers (what happens in Belgium…).

A Natural Feel for Bonsai

bt1063rdplace

I really like the natural untouched feel of this old Spruce. It brings to mind the rugged conifers of the high Sierras and Rockies. It's a Norway spruce (Picea abies) by Walter Pall (from Bonsai Today issue 106).

Yesterday’s post featured Walter Pall’s Bonsai, so let’s just keep going. This one is from the dawn of Bonsai Bark, July 2009. It was titled The Great Debate part 3: More from Walter. Now in 2017, the bonsai community has mostly moved on from the great debate (I don’t think it ever was a big deal anyway, but it does provide some insight into different ways bonsai can be viewed and styled).

In our last Great Debate post, I promised you more from Walter on the topic. The quotes below by Walter are from an article entitled A Naturalistic Scot’s Pine that appeared in Bonsai Today issue 104.

The other two photos in this post are NOT Walter’s trees. They are rather, two examples of naturalistic bonsai by other artists.

b1northcarapellalarch1

This sinuous root American larch (Larix larcina) by Harvey Carapella, might not be as advanced in capturing the subtle qualities of naturalistic bonsai. but it's simple naturalness still appeals. It's from North American Bonsai which was compiled and edited by Martin Schmalenberg. At first glance you might think it has only four trunks (were it so, would it be a problem?), but if you look closely, you can see a small piece of the fifth trunk just to the left of the trunk on the right.

We started this quote from Walter in our previous Great Debate post, but left it hanging. So here’s the whole paragraph: “A traditional bonsai is ideal; it is abstract. A naturalistic bonsai is realistic, but never totally realistic. There’s always a certain degree of abstraction. But never going as far as many modern bonsai, which are very groomed, very refined, and often look almost unreal. They certainly look like a human being, not nature, has made them. Naturalistic bonsai is the opposite of this development (which has gone a bit too far in many cases, in my opinion)”

Walter goes on to say… “A lot of people think they understand this, and let nature do the styling of their tree in a pot. They think that naturalistic styling is just letting a tree grow and styling here and there. This is wrong. It is called naturalistic because it NOT natural. The trick is NOT to leave the stock as is and let nature do the styling. ‘Naturalistic’ means that the end result, the finished tree in a pot, conveys the feeling of an impressive natural tree that has not been touched by man. It does not matter how this is achieved, but in most cases it is done very artificially – not by nature!”

“Naturalistic bonsai has nothing to do with method, but only with result. Clip-and-grow without using wire is an old method for creating bonsai. Many think this is naturalistic bonsai styling. It is not, but it could be. A hedge is created by clip-and-grow method; and it can hardly be called naturalistic…”

Naturalistic is not an excuse for lazy people. It is not about untidy looking trees. It is not a shortcut. I think it is even more labor intensive than traditional styling…”

b1lenzp75jun

Like Walter, Nick Lenz has the magic touch. The tree is a Ground juniper (Juniperus horizontalis) by Nick Lenz, from the now out of print Bonsai from the Wild .

Here are links to the two previous posts on the Great Debate, in case you missed them: One & two.

Another Bonsai Adventure with an Old Ezo Spruce

ezodonedark

This Ezo spruce (Picea jezoenis) belongs to Walter Pall. The hand built pot accentuates its natural look. The tree was originally collected in Hokkaido, Japan sometime before 1950 and is over 100 years old. The pot (Walter calls it a stone) is by Dietmar Popp.

Inventory today. To save time, we’ll borrow from May, 2015.  After this, it’s onward into the New Year and plenty of new posts.

In addition to his bonsai, I like Walter Pall’s instructive step-by-step presentations. It’s like you’re standing there looking over his shoulder. Or in this case, Thomas’ shoulder. In Walter’s own words Thomas helped to get this on it’s way.

Nasty Alligators & Old New Year’s Bonsai

koku31Though any Kokufu bonsai might work to lead with, there's something about Quince flowers... Here's Bill Valavanis' caption: A small size Toyo Nishiki Japanese flowering quince, Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Toyo Nishiki’ with multiple colored flowers. Although red, pink and white blossoms are common for this great cultivar, I’ve often seen red branches grafted onto specimens to improve color distribution.

Welcome to 2017. Even though it’s a day of rest, alligators don’t really rest (nasty year end alligators today and then inventory tomorrow), so I’ve decided to take the easy way out and show you some photos that we featured in February 2015. They are all from the 2015 Kokufu Bonsai Exhibiton and were lifted directly from Bill Valanis’ blog, Welcome To My Bonsai World.

koku6I've got a soft spot for short muscular trees. Especially short muscular trees whose scarred bark and hunched stance tell a story of hard times and harsh conditions, while lush foliage and vibrant strength tell a story of better times and full recovery. Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora).

koku5

Another Quince ("Chinese quince, Pseudocydonia sinensis, created from air layering the top off another bonsai"). No flowers this time, bit plenty of action nevertheless. At the risk of stating the obvious (and once you've gotten past the tree's sheer compact power), you might notice the exfoliating bark. Not to mention (but to mention) that most amazing pot.

koku2

We could have titled this post Quince and Kokufu. Like the tree just above it's a Pseudocydonia sinensis.

koku4

Not a quince, but a Japanese grey-bark elm (Zelkova serrata).

koku

You might get the impression that Kokufu is mostly about deciduous bonsai, but I don't think that's really the case (though winter is a great time show off these beauties in their leafless splendor). This one with its massive nebari could only be a Trident maple.

New Year, New Bonsai Book

yew6-1

Cross polanization and innovation. I don't think you'll see many bonsai quite like this one. It exists at the cutting edge (unintended) of bonsai. This creative innovation is due, at least in part, to travel and the internet. Ideas and technique bounce around the globe at light speed. The cutting edge artist in this case is Harry Harrington. The tree is a yew that we originally posted in June of 2016, and even though it wasn't that long ago, it's worth another look.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen a privet bonsai quite this spectacular. It belongs to Harry Harrington. We've featured it a couple times over the years, but this latest iteration takes it to another level. Here's Harry's caption... "So at last, here it is........taken last night under lights, my Common Privet bonsai (Ligustrum ovalifolium), height 19"/48cm. In a handmade bonsai pot designed and built by Swedish potter Thor Holvila"

Three Pines, a Prize Winning Olive & a Great Display by One of Only Two Americans to Exhibit at the 2014 Kokufu

pine1

This knotted pine, along with the two pines below, were recently posted by Frank Cucchiara. Frank doesn't say anything about them (they look like Japanese black pines), but based on what we know about Frank, we can assume they are his.

This post was going to be short and simple. Three pines borrowed from Frank Cucchiara. But, suddenly, after a little research, we’ve got a tribute to Frank’s bonsai.

pine2

Great tree, but it's the heavy aged bark that really sets it apart.

Frank Cucchiara is one of two Americans who exhibited trees in the 2014 Kokufu Exhibition (the other American was Doug Paul owner of the Kennett Collection). Kokufu is world’s oldest bonsai exhibition and is generally recognized as the world’s premier bonsai exhibition. Having a tree selected for Kokufu is a great honor (Frank’s Kokufu display is below).

Frank was also a prize winner at the 4th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition (his prize winning Olive is below).

evergreenEvergreen Bonsai Award at the 2014 U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition for the Finest Evergreen Bonsai. It's a Wild Olive that belongs to Frank Cucchiara. What a great choice! This distinctive old tree would more than hold its own with the best of the gnarly old Olives that you find in Europe. I borrowed this photo and caption from a post we did back in September, 2014.

Flowers & Snow (& Too Good to Pass Up)

ume770Japanese Flowering apricot (Prunus mume). This would be a remarkable tree even without the flowers. With the flowers... well, you can see for yourself. The tree resides at Bonsai Aichien in Japan.

Speaking of snow, we’re expecting a foot or more over the next day or so. Time to run to the store to stock up on half and half. Meanwhile, we’ll borrow today’s post from February 2014.

Both the photos here were posted on facebook by Juan Andrade who is (was?) an apprentice at Bonsai Aichien and a great source of excellent bonsai photos.

Three Juniper Bonsai & One Juniper Bonsai Book

shim

Here's one that jumped off the page while perusing everyone's favorite social media site. Looks like a Shimpaku juniper. There's a lot to like here: the way the living veins merge in an inverted U shape on the trunk (a strange feature that might disqualify the tree from exhibiting in the famous Japanese bonsai shows, but one that you might appreciate for its unconventional effect); the dynamic movement of the trunk from the base to the top and the feel of coiled stored energy in the trunk (it's the coffee). Then there's the way deadwood in the middle of the crown plays with the movement and negative space created by the foliage. Nice pot too. The photo was posted by Jiang Wen on facebook.

Three juniper bonsai today. I’m guessing they are all Shimpaku, but there are other possibilities when it comes to subspecies of Juniperus chinensis.
