The Emperor’s Bonsai

At least two things set this Root-over-rock  Trident maple (Kaede Ishitsuki – maple planted on a rock) apart from thousands of other root-over Trident maples on this planet. First there it’s exceptional quality, and second, it’s part of Japan’s Imperial Bonsai Collection. The tree’s age is about 90 years. Its height is 57 cm (22.5″). Here’s a quote from the Imperial website… “Among ‘zoki’ deciduous trees, ‘momiji’ (Japanese maple) and “kaede” (maple) (I’m not sure why this isn’t translated as Trident maple) are particular favorites of bonsai lovers because of the way they show off the four seasons. Aficionados appreciate the young buds in … Continue reading The Emperor’s Bonsai

You Don’t See Bonsai Like These Everyday

You don’t see bonsai like this every day. For me, there’s a temptation to grab my thinning shears. But first, it’s a good idea to take it in as is. And there’s a lot to take in. Especially the sheer weight of the remarkably lush foliage. And, if you can pull your eyes down to the trunk, the play of the living veins and deadwood is striking. Unfortunately the tree is not identified (nor attributed), but it looks a lot a like a Shimpaku juniper Normally we shy away from unattributed and unidentified bonsai. But in this case the trees are so unusual that I couldn’t … Continue reading You Don’t See Bonsai Like These Everyday

Small Bonsai Are Still Beautiful Bonsai

This little deciduous tree with its profusion of small orange fruit isn’t identified, so we can only guess. Based on the fruit and the bark we’ll try Crabapple. If we’re wrong and you know what it is (or think you do) you can put it in the comments on our timeline. Short trees and short time today, which is why we’ll take that easy way out and bring back a favorite from our archives. A Literati Red Pine with All the Desired Qualities

Here’s what Michael Bonsai has to say about this tree… “My Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) recently styled by Bjorn Bjorholm at Eisei-en. Quoting Bjorn ‘Reminiscent of the famous #bonsai known as Kuon, this Japanese Red Pine possesses all of the desired qualities of a Meiji era (1868-1912 CE) #literati style bonsai – namely, understated movement, little to no taper, feminine branching.'” Here’s a link to Michael on fb if you’d like to see more 20% OFF SITE WIDE SALE  at STONE LANTERN SEE BELOW   I like the relaxed open feel of the branches and foliage   A closer look at … Continue reading A Literati Red Pine with All the Desired Qualities
