Beyond Dazzling Deadwood

Colorado spruce from Ryan Neil’s Bonsai Mirai. This one is more about the bark than deadwood. Normally bark that covers deadwood is stripped to reveal the deadwood, but in this case it makes sense to just leave it. While we’re at it, we would be remiss not to mention the fantastic pot. You might notice how the trunk almost completely fills it side to side. Such relatively small pots are usually for show and not year round growing. That Natural Look with a Daring Touch

Though the wood may have been painstakingly carved, this distinctive Pomegranate is a good example of a natural look. The living tree is not particularly stylized and the deadwood looks naturally aged. The unusual red pot (bright red bonsai pots are rare) adds a daring touch and sets off the new red pomegranate leaves, though you might chose a rugged earth-toned pot if you’re trying for a more natural look. Before & After – Spectacular & Even More Spectacular

That’s a Japanese yew that this spectacular piece of deadwood is clinging to. It was styled by Naoki Meaoka. The first thought that came to mind when I saw this tree was Yes! The second thought was; ‘is that piece of deadwood for real, or was it just stuck onto an otherwise unspectacular tree? But of course it’s for real. Naoki Meaoka wouldn’t do that. Mugo Pines & Bonsai Pirates

This wild and wonderful mugo pine was posted by Sandro Segneri of the Bonsai Creativo School and Academy. Still too busy, so we’ll dip down into our archives again. One of the Most Compelling Bonsai

This has to be one of the most compelling bonsai I’ve seen in a while. It has that wild, not overly refined look and ‘just so’ deadwood (it’s not dominated by deadwood like so many trees). But the real deal is the trunk. When was the last time you saw a trunk with so much power and character? This before and after is more about refinement than styling rough stock. Can there ever be too much Deadwood?

Mario Komsta (Mariusz Janusz Komsta) recently featured this tree with the following caption: “after refinement by Taiga Urushibata, june 2014.” We’ve featured Mario’s bonsai numerous times, but this is the first time for Taiga. To my eye the tree above is an outstanding bonsai. Powerful, with balance, flow and numerous points of interest (my only question is the chopped off looking jin at the top). Recently a friend mentioned that we’ve been featuring too much deadwood lately. Perhaps he’s correct. There does seem to be a renewed emphasis on creating and carving deadwood. Full Attack Mode

Aggression. Everything is moving to the left. The deadwood, which is so dominant appears to be in full attack mode, while the crown and living branches provide some contrast (speaking of contrasts, you might notice the piece of wood pushing a piece of the trunk up and the wire pulling another piece down). These three trees belong to Masahiko Kimura. I lifted (and cropped) this photo from El Tim Bonsai. It’s a Spanish language blog with an English language option. The Tim. I have long admired the great photos and great dedication to bonsai expressed on the El Tim Bonsai blog (the original Spanish language version and an English language version). More Deadwood & Six Reasons to Love a Bonsai

The uninitiated sometimes wonder how a tree like this stays alive. The answer; excellent care and that live vein that snakes its way up the trunk. The feature that really sets this tree apart (taking nothing away from the live vein and the tree’s overall beauty and balance) is that delicious deadwood reaching into the sky.
