Bonsai Beasts of the Southern Wild

Beast of the Southern Wild. We don’t know the dimensions of this monster, but we know its name. It’s a Pithecellobium unguis (Catclaw black bead), a genus and species completely new to us (and probably new to you too). As you can see, this particular bonsai is about as unique as they get with nature doing most of the work and Nacho Marin providing the finishing touches. The World’s Largest Bonsai?

That’s a human arm resting on the side of the pot. I don’t know what kind of tree it is, but based on the trunk and nebari, I might guess it’s a Ficus of some sort. I also don’t know where this monster tree resides. However, I do know who the hand and arm belong to. His name is Enrique Castaño, the author of Botany for Bonsai, The Science Behind the Art (Stone Lantern & Haskill Creek). The photo is from Enrique’s timeline. It’s hard to tell how large this tree is, but I’d guess that it’s fairly substantial. No matter how large or small, it’s a powerful twin trunk juniper with excellent taper, fluid lines and deadwood that’s just right (substantial, but not overdone). Sold! That Compact Muscular Look

I really like this sturdy little jewell. Not only is a Larch, a favorite in this part of the world – with that aged bark that adds a genuine bonafide to any bonsai – but it also has that compact muscular look that I’m often attracted to. I think this one qualifies as Mame (‘bean’ in Japanese), a common word for the smallest bonsai. Both the tree (Pyracatha) and pot are by Haruyosi. I’ve been thinking about starting another series of posts on Mame Master Haruyosi’s tiny bonsai. However, there are too many obligations today and no time today to put together a new post. Two More Brilliant Before & After Bonsai

We found these two photos at Bonsai Shikoku. All the text is Japanese and there are no intermediate photos, so what you see is what you get. At a glance you can see that there have been two major changes. First, the foliage has been thinned in order to expose most of the trunk and some of the branching. This allows for an unobstructed view of the deadwood and the lower sections of the living veins.
