More European Bonsai – Poland this Time

We found this Japanese white pine (Goyomatsu) at Bonsai Warsaw. The other photos shown here are from the Warsaw Bonsai Show. They were posted by Will Baddeley (links for both are below) Polish bonsai anyone? And just in case you think I’m a mole planted here to showcase European bonsai… well, it’s true, I do appreciate what’s going on in the European bonsai community and how rapidly they’ve advanced over the last 20 to 30 years.* But really, anywhere you find quality bonsai is good enough. Here’s your link to Bonsai Warsaw. And here’s Will Baddeley KILO BONSAI WIRE ONLY 16.50 per roll Only 14.85 off with your 150.00+ discount … Continue reading More European Bonsai – Poland this Time

Marc’s Masterpiece

Whoa! Marc Noelanders posted this exquisite composition and my guess is he’s the artist behind it. Here’s his caption… “Another huge wooden wall.Hopefully we’ll see you all next year at Bonsai namaste Convention.”  Not a bad idea. Here’s your link to 2018 If you follow Marc Noelanders on facebook you’ve already seen this masterpiece and its 10,000 rave reviews. If not, I’m happy you can see it here   I cropped this one for a closer look, though I’m a little nervous about messing with something like this. Maybe you can just imagine that you are standing very close. While you’re here … Continue reading Marc’s Masterpiece

Shopping for Bonsai in Japan

I’ve always had a soft spot for three fingered Shohin bonsai (bonsai that are easily held with three fingers). Particularly ones from Japan, where most of the good ones seem to show up… at least in photos. This one looks like a Shimpaku juniper. It’s from Bonsái Pavía, as are all the photos in this post. Today must be my lucky day. Not only did I discover a new bonsai company (new to us at least), I also discover a never before used theme for Bonsai Bark… shopping for bonsai in Japan. The new company is Bonsái Pavía in Madrid, Spain. They’re the ones doing … Continue reading Shopping for Bonsai in Japan

Winter Bonsai Silhouettes – Coming Sooner than You Think

In addition to the massive nebari and the lush soft green foliage contrasted with the soft creme pot, you might appreciate the near perfect photograph. It was taken by the omnipresent Joe Noga (all the photos in this post are his as are numerous other bonsai photos featured on this blog and elsewhere). As you can see, the tree is a Willow leaf ficus. No mention is made of the artist. The photo is from the 2016 Winter Silhouette Bonsai Expo gallery. I can’t say with certainty that this year’s Winter Silhouette Bonsai Expo will be the best yet, but there’s a good … Continue reading Winter Bonsai Silhouettes – Coming Sooner than You Think

U.S. National Shohin Bonsai Exhibition – June 23-25

This classy Shohin display shows the quality you can expect at the upcoming U.S. National Shohin Bonsai Exhibition. It’s coming soon and it promises to be the Shohin bonsai event of the year. And best of all, it’s not too late to treat yourself and make your plans to be in Kannapolis, North Carolina (30 miles north of Charlotte) June 23-25. Here are three links for more details (Bill Valavanis’ website, Bill on facebook and Bill’s blog). Nice Tree, Spectacular Pot & Other Small Bonsai Wonders

Nice tree. Spectacular pot. This shot is from the just completed World Bonsai Convention. I cropped the original (see below) to eliminate some background noise. Staying with the World Bonsai Convention theme, though this time it’s all Shohin (small trees). I can’t read the name of the person who took these photos, but here’s your link. Bonsai Brilliance Multiplied

Both the tree and the pot are brilliant and each could stand on its own. But together their brilliance is multiplied. Based on the flowers, I’d say the tree is a quince. The photos trees and pots shown here all belong to Michiko Koide. It’s noon already and the project I was working on this morning is bogged down (blogged down). We’ll set it aside for the moment and resort to an old trick. This one is from March, 2016, with a little value added – a couple new photos from Michiko Koide’s facebook timeline. I don’t know much about … Continue reading Bonsai Brilliance Multiplied

Bonsai Artistry in Red & Yellow

There are few things more delicate and beautiful than fresh spring Maple leaves. This exquisite tree and pot are perfect expressions of the artistry of Haruyoshi. Heavy spring snowstorm this weekend. Need to get dressed and get shoveling, so we’ll take the easy way out. This one is from September, 2015. Shoin bonsai & ceramic artist Haruyosi does a couple things that set him apart. First, he regularly posts masterpiece shohin and mame bonsai and pots, and second, he posts a lot of photos that reveal the creative process. For both trees and pots. More exquisite bonsai by Haruyosi below… … Continue reading Bonsai Artistry in Red & Yellow

Shohin Bonsai… (Copper Wire Sale EndsTonight)

Judging by the leaves and fruit, I’d guess that this might be a dwarf Kumquat of some sort. Whatever it is, I know it’s small because of the proportions and because it’s part of Shohin display. Beyond that, I can’t read the Japanese script, so there’s nothing definite to say about the artist or the type trees shown here. The Shohin bonsai in this post may not be the most sophisticated or otherwise fantastic that we’ve featured over the years (we have over 200 posts in our archives where Shohin is at least mentioned), but there’s something uncontrived and basic … Continue reading Shohin Bonsai… (Copper Wire Sale EndsTonight)

Shohin Shimpaku juniper. It looks like it could belong to Suthin, but there’s no identification or attribution, so that’s just a guess. If you know who it belongs to and you let me know, I’ll make the correction if I’m wrong. Thought you might like to know about the upcoming U.S. National Shohin Bonsai Exhibition. Bill Valavanis just posted this today, so it’s hot off the press.
