Black pine, red wine. The essence of a good bonsai life. What if Suthin Sukosolvisit was selling most of his magnificent bonsai collection and you weren’t there? Well, Suthin is selling most of his magnificent bonsai collection and fortunately, you can be there. Royal Bonsai, Stoughton Mass, this coming weekend, June 25th & 26th. Buy your ticket. Gas up your car. Get out your bicycle and fill up the tires. Hitch up your horse. Put on your walking shoes and stick out your thumb. Whatever it takes. So Many Great Bonsai Offered in One Place at One Time

I would like to encourage you make the trip (long or short) to Suthin Sokusolvisit’s upcoming Private Collection Sales Event. Not because there’s anything in it for me (there isn’t) but because Suthin is one of our most accomplished American bonsai artists and so many great trees offered in one place at one time is a truly rare occasion. And though I don’t like to get all dopey about people, still, if you’ve met Suthin, chances are you consider him a friend. details below… The dates are June 25th and 26th. The place is Suthin’s Royal Bonsai Garden, in Stoughton, Mass. … Continue reading So Many Great Bonsai Offered in One Place at One Time

Suthin’s Stupendous Bonsai Sale

This massive Trident maple is one of approximately 200 bonsai offered at Suthin Sukosolivisit’s upcoming Private Collection Sales Event. First a disclaimer. We get nothing for promoting Suthin’s ( or anyone’s) bonsai sales or other events. Just an occasional thank you. But that’s enough. We’re happy to do it and we’re promoting our own business at the same time (Bonsai Book Sale and Wire Sales end tonight), so we’re okay with the arrangement. We’ll just show you a handful of photos of bonsai for sale at Suthin’s upcoming event (June 25 & 26) and encourage you to take a look … Continue reading Suthin’s Stupendous Bonsai Sale

Larch Bonsai – Good Stock Never Hurts

Larches in training by Francois Jeker. Traveling again, so we’ll delve back into our archives. This one draws on material from three different posts. Larches are easy to grow (especially if you live in the north), easy to train and are naturally attractive trees. If you start with decent stock and you have some grasp of design and technique, you can end up with the kind of results you see above. This is not to say each tree couldn’t have been styled differently as they certainly could have. Give the same potential bonsai to five different bonsai artists and you’ll … Continue reading Larch Bonsai – Good Stock Never Hurts

Black Hills Bonsai, Before & After

Another Suthin bonsai on a rock. This one is a Black Hills Spruce (Picea glauca var. densata). The contrast with this photo and the before photo below will give you a good idea of Suthin’s vision and skill. These two photos beg more questions than I can answer right now (time constraints, you know). So we’ll leave them for another time. Meanwhile, take a close look if you have the time and see what questions come to mind. Both photos shown here are from Suthin’s facebook feed. Before. It’s hard to believe this is the same tree. In fact if … Continue reading Black Hills Bonsai, Before & After

Just for Fun

This Shimpaku juniper with its host of other plants (on an almost completely covered rock) is by Suthin. As are the other two Shimpaku shown here (as well as dozens of other brilliant bonsai by Suthin that we’ve featured here on Bark over the last seven years). If you follow Suthin Sukosolvisit, there are three things it would be hard not to notice. He is remarkably talented. He is also remarkably prolific. And best of all, he likes to have fun. For now, we’ll focus on the fun. In particular, Suthin’s occasional Just for fun posts on facebook. All three … Continue reading Just for Fun

Towering Tamarack Bonsai

This towering Tamarack is too tall for the photo, so the top and a tiny piece of the bottom of the pot are missing (you can see almost all of it below). It belongs to Suthin Sukosolvisit. Tamarack is a local name for the American larch (Larix laricina). Suthin identifies it only as ‘larch,’ a genus of trees that numbers about twelve species; so Tamarack is a guess based on geography. Suthin Sukosolvisit is selling part of his personal bonsai collection (see the Tsukomo cypress below). This is a great opportunity to own a masterpiece bonsai by one of our … Continue reading Towering Tamarack Bonsai

Revisiting a Great Shohin Display & More

This Shohin display is from Suthin Sukosolvisit’s Bonsai Gallery. Every National Bonsai Exhibition has featured at least one these by Suthin. This year I challenged myself to pick out Suthin’s display as I walked into the Shohin section of the Exhibition. It was easy. Taking nothing away from some other wonderful displays, still, Suthin’s caught my attention from across the room. Leaving for short vacation today and pressed for time so we’ll dip back into our archives. This one originally appeared just over a year ago, right after the 4th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition. Before any winners were announced. Though … Continue reading Revisiting a Great Shohin Display & More

Satsuki & Other Bonsai, Doug Paul’s Doug Fir & Famous Bonsai Artist in Baggy Pants

Part of the large Satsuki (and maybe other Azaleas?) at the Kennett Collection. There’s no doubt this photo was taken in the spring (Satsuki means 5th month), but we just discovered it and the other shown here yesterday. We haven’t featured the Kennett Collection for a while now, though we did feature a Doug Paul tree that was at the Artisans Cup (see below). These photos (with the exception of the last one) are all from facebook.   A different angle and a lot closer.   More Satsuki. No label but no doubt it’s a root-over-rock Trident maple in fall … Continue reading Satsuki & Other Bonsai, Doug Paul’s Doug Fir & Famous Bonsai Artist in Baggy Pants

Bonsai on a Half Shell

This Tsukomo cypress-on-a-half-shell* is being offered for sale by Suthin Sukosolvisit. Before I read the variety I thought for sure it was a Hinoki cypress (same genus, Chamaecyparis, but different species), but I’ll defer to Suthin’s keen eye. Our old friend Suthin (Suthin Bonsai Studio) has been putting up new trees for sale on a regular basis for the last few months. These aren’t just bonsai from your everyday bonsai company either. Each one is from Suthin’s personal collection, and when an artist offers something from their personal collection, it’s usually among their very best. Speaking of his best, Suthin’s … Continue reading Bonsai on a Half Shell
