Roy Lichtenstein may have known painting but I’m not so sure he knew bonsai. The tree is strange, the pot is strange and too small, it’s in a place that makes no sense, even temporarily. Still, he’s Roy Lichenstein and he was rich and famous and probably wouldn’t have cared what I think. And, if he could enter this painting in our contest, (you can ignore the ‘paint by numbers’ idea if you want) it would be taken seriously. I borrowed the image from SoHo Art.
You too can become rich and famous
Well, rich might be a stretch, and famous, I guess that’s a stretch too, though we had over 10,000 visitors last month. Anyway, enter our contest. Paint, draw, digitally create, or whatever, something that relates to bonsai and you just might win a $50.00 gift certificate to Stone Lantern. Just do it! You’ll be glad you did. Just be sure to send it (digitally and in the comments below) by August 31, 2009.
Here’s a photo of Roy Lichtenstein’s original drawing that he made for the painting. It’s from the Museum of Contempory Art, Chicago. You can enter a line drawing if you want. You even color this one and enter it.
You don’t have to use the silly ‘paint by numbers.’
You can use it if you want, but you don’t have to. It was just a starting point. Note: the use of the word ‘silly’ was a poor choice and I apologize if anyone was offended. The original paint by numbers image has been removed at the request of the artist.
Dear Wayne:
I was looking for rules and where to send digital Bonsai art. Please advise.
Warmest regards,
Carl L. Rosner
Hi Carl,
The rules (as they are) and where to reply (here) are in this very post that you have commented on.

Hi Carl,
For the last 12 months i have been working on a fine art thesis revolving around bonsai, it features a 3 minute hand drawn animation which took over 500 hours to complete and i would love to enter it in the contest. The problem is, im not sure how i should host it or if i should just mail you the cd.
Please respond
Hi Richard,
You can put it up on youtube or vimeo and send a link to comments (here).
BTW: Who’s Carl?
Thanks Wayne, I have actually finished constructing a new artist blog and the series is featured on it. I would love if you could look in to the series and I would like to submit it in its entirety to the contest.
This is the link

The small film took around 50 hours, and the larger movie was over 500 hours of drawing. Each frame is drawn by hand on newsprint, then photographed and this process is repeated over 8000 times. The still images are then sequenced digitally

I have always thought about painting bonsai to supplement my oil painting career. When I saw this contest on your blog I thought, “what the heck”. I have 26 tress in my own collection but I choose a bonsai right out of a magazine, just as if another enthusiast sent me their tree to paint. Like other paintings in my portfolio my style is impressionistic and therefore lacking in detail which may not appeal to most bonsai enthusiast but for those with a contemporary view this might be right up their alley. Thanks for this opportunity. John
Great site. I enjoyed your paintings. Don’t wait too long to link you bonsai painting, the sale ends the last day of the month.
Sorry Wayne. I don’t know how to link my bonsai painting (jpeg) to your site. I sent it to you as an attachment at wayne@stonelantern.com
