This kind of monster tropical bonsai is not all that uncommon in Taiwan. It’s a Ficus microcarpa by Chen, Wen-Zhong. It won the Superior Prize at the 2010 Taiwan Bonsai Creator Association. Height: 100cm, Style: Raft.
Vacation quickie

This is rather embarrassing. I wrote that the tree is only 10 years old because that’s the misprint I copied. The problem is, in my fantasy world about how fast tropical bonsai grow (I live northern Vermont) I actually didn’t question the ridiculousness ten years. Without going into more detail about my bonsai credentials, I’ll just say ‘read my blog at your own risk.’

The id on the second tree is not accurate. It is a Pemphis acidula. Crossostephium sinensis is a plant in the chrisanthemum family know as ‘furong’ in Taiwan. Pemphis acidula is Hai Furong (Sea furong). Maybe that’s where the mistake comes from.
