Looking Into the Bonsai Future 7/2/13

This dramatic photo of one of Robert Steven’s masterful bonsai was borrowed from the Internet Bonsai Club. It’s our first taste of what promises to be a remarkable event (see below for some details).

FREE ADVERTISING! Would you like to see your bonsai event featured here? If so, just send me a notice with a link to the event. That’s it. But remember, no link, no show. My email is wayne@stonelantern.com. You might also want to mention the event (with or without a link) in the comments below.

There are no graphics for this Lake Charles Bonsai Society calendar, but still, because we were sent a link (by Alan Walker) and because it’s a very good calendar that features some upcoming events from around the country, I think it’s definitely worth a look.

This very corky Cork oak is from Mauro Stemberger’s Italian Bonsai Dream. Mauro will be conducting two workshops at the Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention XXXVI.

Oct 31 – Nov 2: Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention XXXVI—Bonsai Artist Studio: OUTSIDE THE BOX. I think you’ll kick yourself if you miss this one. Especially if you live within a few thousand miles of Los Angeles (most def if you live within a few hundred miles). A very big part of the reason why is the impressive list of headliners: Dave DeGroot, Suthin Sukosolvisit, Peter Warren, Mauro Stemberger, Kathy Shaner, Tom Elias and Sean Smith.

Finally! I have been looking for photo of a tree by Kathy Shaner and now, finally we have this Yew (Kathy is a headliner at the Golden State Convention). Here’s the original caption as we found it at Bonsai in Hoosierland: “Permanent collection, Chicago Botanic Garden. Kathy Shaner, artist. (Forgive the quality of this photo, please.)” I tried to do something about the quality by cropping out some extraneous noise. Thus the missing piece of the pot.

South Africa’s Eastern Bonsai Societies map of the world.

Oct 24 – 27: SABA, South Africa Bonsai Association Convention 2013 is being hosted by Eastern Bonsai Societies (EBS) and features Michael Hagedorn, Walter Pall and Rob Kepinski.

I lifted this sweet little planting from Michael Hagedorn’s Crataegus Bonsai. Michael is one of the headlines at the South Africa Bonsai Association Convention 2013. Here’s Michael’s caption: “Columbine is one of my favorite plants. This is the first time I can remember it blooming the same week as the hawkweed, which is the yellow flower here. The dying flowers of the hawkweed, by the way, should be removed promptly or you will have them EVERYWHERE and you’ll likely be deported to Antarctica by your neighbors for the oversight. Spiral Orchid peeking out around the left side, which will likely give us a show in another month or so.”

October 2014: Planning ahead. I’m already excited about next year’s International Bonsai & Culture Biennale. I’ve long wanted to visit Indonesia and now I have no excuse. As an extra plus, our friend Robert Steven is the driving force behind this one (his show website is under construction, but meanwhile you can visit the Internet Bonsai Club for details).

  1. I thought I recognized that yew picture. :)

I watched part of Kathy’s styling demo, in which she tackled this tree (with Ivan Watter’s assistance.) The biggest challenge was that it was simply not a very bonsai-friendly piece of material to begin with! Lots of arrow-straight lines, major reverse taper, etc. I was impressed that she accomplished so much.

  2. Hi Wayne,

    Thanks for posting.
Yes, I am expecting your coming ofcourse, as we are expecting hundreds of guests from all over the world.

We are now working “all-out” very hard to make this event the mist unique bonsai event ever made, the first bonsai biennale…

Stay in tune, and we will come back for the Breaking News…

  3. We are organizing a colossal bonsai event called “International Bonsai Art & Culture Biennale” ( Theme : When Art and Culture Meet Through Bonsai ) in Yogyakarta, an old historical/ cultural city in Central Java of Indonesia, renowned as the centre of classical Javanese fine art and culture . This event is joined organized by Forum Hobby Indonesia (FHI) and Indonesia Bonsai Art Club Association (Aksisain), supported by Keraton King Palace of Yogyakarta, Vredeburg Fortress Museum, Culture & Tourism of Yogyakarta, and Tour Guide Association of Yogyakarta.

The exhibition venue will be in an old historical Dutch fortress, the “Vredeburg Fortress Museum” and the “International Culture Night” will be hosted by our Yogya Sultan in the “Keraton Palace”. All are within walking distance to the city center, Beringharjo traditional market, Malioboro night market etc. After the opening ceremony, all guests will join the “andong” horse-carriage and “becak” city parade to enjoy the unique bonsai display along the city boulevard.

There will be “King Trophy” from Sultan Hamengku Buwono X for the best bonsai, “Ismail Saleh Trophy” and other international trophies will be awarded. There will be uncounted art & cultural activities during the event as well e.g. demo of batik drawing, silver jewelries, ceramic making, painting, sculpturing, traditional music (gamelan) & dance, wayang (puppet) show; touring to such as Borobudur Temple, Merapi Volcano, Taman Sari Water Palace, Kasongan traditional crafts center, caving adventures ; or we can also organize special tour to Bromo Mt, Bali Island or other specific trips…etc…

We will also organize a picnic-trip where all guests will participate in the “Friendship Trees-Planting Picnic” as part of our green campaign activity. We are also planning to all guests to participate in the process of making “The World Largest Landscape Bonsai” for the museum record; last but not least, all international delegates will be requested to participate to perform their unique culture in the “International Culture Night” with their traditional costumes, of course …and more…

It will be from 18 – 21 October 2014, in concert with the celebration of 258-th birthday of Yogyakarta City; so we will also celebrate together the “258 Lanterns Night for Yogyakarta”.

Please jot down and reserve your schedule, bring your family and experience the great fun.

  4. Hi Wayne
My partner Nathan Simmons and I are the team putting together the non judged display at the GSBF convention this Holloween in Burbank, California.
We have searched (and are still searching) hi and low for awesome, never been or rarely been displayed trees for the convention. The purpose of this convention as opposed to those in the past, is that you come away from it a better bonsai artist through the increased exposure and interaction with the headliners like Suthin, Mauro Stermberger, peter Warren, Dave Degroot etc.
Besides the usual there will be a holloween bus excursion into hollywood. If you have not been to hollywood during holloween, you have not experienced a proper holloween!
By the way, mauro Stermberger is doing a workshop with Live Oaks. I have seen the trees that are going to be supplied. Big fat trunks and lots of branches. If you don’t live on the west coast, a chance to get a tree of this caliber AND have Mauro help you style it is reason alone to visit L.A. and come to the convention. Please hurry, as there is a limited number of people that can get in that workshop, and it’s filling fast!. go to http://www.gsbfconvention.org for early bird registration. See you guys there!

  5. Elliot,

Your event sound great as well.
Mauro Stemberger will be one of our next year headliners as well…beside Pedro Morales, Bill Valavanis, Prof. Amy Liang etc…

  6. Thanks Robert and Elliot for filling us in on your respective shows. I look forward to posting more on each as they get closer and any additional info is always appreciated.
